Week 18 Winner - May 13, 2010
Honor Flight of the Quad Cities
Lujack’s is proud to recognize the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities as this week’s Extra Mile Winner. The Quad Cities created Honor Flight of the Quad Cities to fly America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honoring their sacrifices. Top priority is given to survivors of WWII and any veterans with a terminal illness who wish to visit their memorial.

 

The intention is to honor as many of our local and regional heroes who were selfless in their military duty, with a free trip to visit their memorial. Veterans from throughout a 75 mile radius are encouraged to apply for the trip. The program operates on donations from organizations and individuals. Volunteers of all kinds will be needed to plan and coordinate the flight event, and special guardians will be trained to help escort the veterans the day of the flight.

 

WWII Veterans interested in applying for the trip, as well as interested donors and volunteers, are encouraged to call Bob Morrison at (563) 388-3271 or email Bob at bmorrison@ridgecrestvillage.org.

Preeclampsia Foundation
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize John and Brenda Warner of the Preeclampsia Foundation as this week’s Extra Mile award winners.  The Preeclampsia Foundation is a non profit organization dedicated to funding research, raising public awareness and providing support and education for those whose lives have been touched by preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.  John and Brenda dedicate their time and energy into the fundraising events that the Preeclampsia Foundation hosts in the Quad Cities.  These events include trivia nights, Preeclampsia Awareness night at the Ballpark, the Promise Walk and many others.  Anyone who needs more information about the Preeclampsia Foundation can go to www.preeclampsia.org.

Week 16 Winner - April 29, 2010
Neurology Consultants
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize the staff of Neurology Consultants, P.C. as this week’s Extra Mile Winner. The Neurology Consultants staff have organized flea markets for the past three years and given the money to CASI (Center for Active Seniors) to support Jane’s Place, the only adult day-care facility in Scott County. The unsold items are then donated to the Disabled American Veterans. They gave their $500 Extra Mile winnings to Jane’s Place and to date, have given them over $6,000!

Week 15 Winner - April 22, 2010
Sarah Ford
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Sarah Ford from Port Byron as this week’s Extra Mile winner. Sarah brought together the Green Committee for Port Byron and is currently working on a Community Garden, Prairie Garden and has recently helped to organize clean up of two miles of the Mississippi River.  She is also active with the Water Keep Alliance and works closely with River Action.

Barb and Steve Neafcy
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Barb and Steve Neafcy as this week’s Extra Mile winners. They have selflessly made it their life’s work to educate and advocate for those who are affected by Fetal Alcohol Sprectrum Disorder. This disorder causes life-crippling brain damage to unborn children whose mother consumed alcohol while pregnant. Steve is a victim of this disorder and wrote a book called “The Long Way to Simple” which is both insightful and practical as a workbook. Barb is a registered nurse who cares for children with several medical conditions. They dedicate their time to this cause and created an on-line community to reach families who are searching for answers. Their email is fasnest@msn.com

Week 13 Winner - April 8, 2010
Hazel Sletten
 Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Hazel Sletten as this week’s Extra Mile winner. Twenty-nine years ago, Hazel and her husband Larry took in a homeless and hungry family and her charitable giving has never stopped. Located in the back of the Colona Police Station, the Colona Food Pantry feeds over 100 families in Colona and the surrounding area. Hazel volunteers her time and works closely with local supporters and organizations to keep the food pantry full.

Week 12 Winner - April 1, 2010
Lisa and Jim Moellenbeck
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Lisa and Jim Mollenbeck as this week’s Extra Mile winners! Lisa and Jim are very involved in volunteering for their kids’ school and sporting events and are always helping to raise money for both. From working concession stands at Brady Street Stadium to working a at North High School helping raise funds for the basketball teams, Lisa and Jim take volunteering seriously and know how much it benefits the kids in these programs.

Week 11 Winner - March 25, 2010
Jackie Staron
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Jackie Staron as this week’s Extra Mile winner. Jackie goes the extra mile by helping raise funds and items for the Family Resource’s Domestic Violence Shelter.

 

Jackie, along with her committee of friends and family, organized DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended) and have several large fundraising events each year. Lujack’s is a proud sponsor of the DOVE women’s golf tournament and the Fill the Truck events. The Fill the Truck, scheduled for Saturday June 12, is an opportunity for the community to donate much needed basic items to the shelter. Jackie is also instrumental in getting Isabel Bloom and designer Donna Young to dedicate a new limited edition statute “On Wings of Hope” with 50% of the proceeds going to the shelter.  Jackie donated her $500 prize to help the women and children of the shelter.

Week 10 Winner - March 18, 2010
Joe Clancy
Joe is a trained American Red Cross disaster volunteer and regularly responds to local house fires. He assists the victims of the fire by arranging immediate shelter, clothing and food. Joe is also there to give support to the victims both immediately afterwards and in the weeks to follow. In addition to his disaster work, Joe is also a volunteer Military Caseworker for the Red Cross. Military Caseworkers provide emergency communication for military families in the event of a birth, death or critical illness. Caseworkers are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to quickly verify this information and contact the deployed soldier’s commander who gets the news to the solider. Because of Joe’s extensive training, he has been selected to serve on the Red Cross Services to Armed Forces Quality Control National Taskforce. Joe has generously donated his $500 prize back to the American Red Cross.

Week 9 Winner - March 11, 2010
Dan Nietzel

 Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Mr. Dan Nietzel of Muscatine West Middle School as this week’s “Extra Mile” Winner.  Mr N's Haiti Crew are a group of 6th graders in Muscatine who saw the devastation in Haiti after the recent earthquake and decided to make a difference.  Students voted on a bracelet design and started selling bracelets at the school and around the community.  Their goal is to raise $5000 for Haiti Relief and with this prize, they are well on their way!

Children's Book Room

Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize the Children’s Book Room inside the Christian Friendliness Center in Moline, IL as this week’s “Extra Mile” Winner.  This room was founded by 5 area women who donate their time and energy to help promote childhood literacy.  At no cost to them, children may visit the Book Room to select a book to keep as their own.  The Children’s Book Room will use their prize money to purchase new and gently used books.  For more information about the Children’s Book Room, visit their website at www.qcbookroom.org.

Week 7 Winner - February 25, 2010
Sister Bobbi Bussan
Lujack’s Northpark Auto Plaza is proud to recognize Sister Bobbi Bussan of the Saint Joseph the Worker House in Rock Island, IL as this week’s “Extra Mile” winner.  Sister Bobbi helps this organization take in displaced women and children and helps to get them back on their feet.   Sister Bobbi has generously donated her $500 prize back to the house to help the residents.

Week 6 Winner - February 18, 2010
Glenn Anderson
Glenn is a Vietnam War Veteran and a member of the Vietnam Veteran’s of America.  Glenn and his fellow VVA Members perform as the color guard in most of the parades in the Quad Cities.  His group is also the Honor Guard at funeral ceremonies for our area’s retired military members.  Glenn is President of the All Veteran’s Memorial in Davenport Memorial Park. Glenn is donating his award to help the area’s Veterans.

Week 5 Winner - February 11, 2010
Iowa QC Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association
Since 2005, the IQCCPAAA has volunteered 17,122 hours assisting citizens of the QC Area.  Volunteers help with everything from controlling traffic during area parades to answering Community Service Calls and offering clerical help at local police stations and jails.

Week 4 Winner - February 4, 2010
Steve DePron
Steve is the owner and operator of Bike and Hike in Rock Island, Illinois.  For the past 10 years during the holidays, Steve and a crew of volunteers put together the “Bikes for Brains” program for area children.  This program outfits needy children with a free bicycle and a properly fitted helmet.  Steve also supplies the bikes needed for the Chicago Bears training camps in Bourbonaiss, IL and all bikes are then donated to needy children.  Due to a food shortage in the Quad Cities, Mr. DePron has decided to generously donate his prize money to the RiverBend Food Bank

Week Three Winner -- January 28, 2010
Shelly Logston
Shelly is the principal of Cambridge Elementary in Cambridge, IL.  Together with the students and staff, she put together the Caring Hearts program which helps area families during the holidays and all year round.  The group raises money through pie and fruit sales and uses the funds to "play Santa" for children in need.

Week Two Winner -- January 21, 2010
Nancy Nehlsen

Nancy is a foster dog-mom for K9 Kindness Rescue in Davenport. She takes in foster dogs for K9 Kindness Rescue and lets them live at her rural home, so they can enjoy some homelife until they are eventually adopted by a loving family.  Nancy has adopted some dogs herself because she couldn't bear to part with them, but she can't adopt ALL the dogs.

Week One Winners -- January 13th, 2010

Quad City Airport Snow Buzzards

Starting December 21st the Snow Buzzards, 7 men to a team, worked 12 hours a day to remove snow from the runways and taxiways at the airport so that travelers would be able to visit their families and friends during the holidays. By doing this, the 14 men were not able to enjoy the holidays with their families and friends because they are dedicated to the safety of those traveling from the Quad City Airport.
